Located in the Northwestern United States lives the Native American people of the Nez Perce culture. They lived throughout the Columbia Plateau, a geological region that stretches across parts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Their traditional homeland is located in North Central Idaho, which is the location of the Nez Perce Reservation. There is an estimated population of 3,499.

The Nez Perce’s native language is Niimiipuutimt. Their name in their native toungue is Nimi'ipuu, which means "The People." The name “Nez Perce” means, “Pierced Nose” and was given to them by French speaking Canadian trappers even though the Nez Perce did not practice the piercing of their noses. 

 Their current reservation is located in Idaho. It is approximately 1,195 square miles. The Nez Perce National Historical Park, located in Idaho on their reservation, includes a research center and library, which boasts archives of historical documents and artifacts.
